However the average dormer loft conversion with a double bedroom and en suite costs about 35 000 45 000.
Loft conversion roof not high enough.
Loft conversion in a flat.
Instead of the normal requirement for headroom of 2m above each stair tread it is recognised that ceilings to loft stairs may need to slope e g.
There is no minimum ceiling height to meet the building regulations other than above stairs which require 2m of clear headroom.
So a reduced space of 1 9m above the centre and 1 8m on the lower side can be acceptable as long as you can achieve 2m on the higher side.
Most people don t find the process disruptive and most steps are expected and accounted for.
Thanks lizs we cross posted.

It s an industry standard that the centre of the roof and a majority of the ceiling is at least 2 2 metres in height.
Most loft conversion sites seem to state that 1 9m is the minimum practical height for a loft.
There s a high chance your loft conversion can be done without planning permission as most are classed as permitted development which means planning permission isn t required subject to the following criteria.
This could be a hip to gable loft conversion or a mansard conversion for example.
Believe it or not a loft conversion in a flat is not completely out of the question.
If you have a shallow pitched roof for example a loft conversion would be difficult.
The only rule is that there must be a min head height of 1 9m above the stairs.
Shallow roofs are particularly difficult because there isn t enough headroom so even adding large dormers won t actually add much room to the internal space.
Changing the roof structure for a loft conversion.
This option is the most expensive as it requires the complex removal and rebuild of the existing roof.
Maximum of 40 cubic metres of additional roof space for terraced houses or 50 cubic metres for detached and semi detached.
Plus you will need to make sure you have a party wall agreement signed with those living below and next to you.
Often even though the middle part of the room may have sufficient headspace the pitch of the roof may be so severe that it becomes impractical to use the loft as a living area without alterations.
So mine will not be below the industry recommendation but it is right at the lower limit.
A pitch angle of under 40 degrees is generally considered too low for a living space and often means that the central head height is less than allowed by regulation.
When your house has a more unusual roof structure or shape it can be more challenging.
If this is not the case for you does that mean you can t have a loft conversion.
